Aromatherapy Courses at Beech House

Aromatherapy is as exotic, as relaxing and as beneficial as it sounds.

The word itself explains the treatment - the aroma comes from what we call "essential oils". These are massaged into the face and body, and that is the therapy.

The secret is in the oils, extracted from plants; exclusive, mysterious substances, yet known to man for thousands of years.

The oils occur only in the tiniest amounts. They are painstakingly - therefore - expensively - collected. It takes a million rose petals to make one pound of rose oil; and six thousand pounds of orange blossom to obtain four ounces of Neroli oil.

The oils occur in different parts of the plant. They can come from the flowers (lavender), the roots (calmus), the leaves (rosemary) or the bark (sandalwood).

From their known popularity with the ancient Egyptians, essential oils grew to eminence in seventeenth century medicine, before science supplanted them with more powerful and faster-acting chemicals.

A Frenchman, Gatte Fosse, rediscovered the therapeutic qualities of essential oils. He burned his hand during a laboratory experiment, doused it in a dish of lavender oil lying nearby, and was astonished at the speed of recovery. His book on the subject in 1928, first coined the term aromatherapy.

Today, an extraordinary range of the oils is used in beauty treatments, including peppermint, cedarwood, sage, juniper, angelica, basil, geranium, coriander, eucalyptus, nutmeg, jasmine and scores more.

Many of these are specifically useful for treating conditions of some distress, such as sallow skin, acne, poor circulation, tired muscles, etc.

My own case histories include a client who took pills for two years and was still unable to get a decent sleep. After three aromatherapy treatments, she was away like a baby. Another whose legs were the same shape form top to bottom, until a course of aromatherapy produced dramatic results - shapely legs.

Those are extreme examples. For the most part, and the most clients, aromatherapy is a luxurious way of hitting back at our stressful life-styles. It repairs the damage, makes the skin glow, lifts the spirit.

It shows in your face when you leave.
